1333 Bikeathon Takes Suicide Prevention Message from Chilaw to Kurunegala

By Vipula Amarasinghe

The 1333 Crisis Support Service has launched the 13th consecutive edition of its annual Bikeathon, using a nationwide cycling tour to raise awareness about suicide prevention and the importance of mental well-being.
The cycling campaign continued on August 30 with riders travelling from Chilaw to Kurunegala, covering a distance of 91 kilometres as they carried the message of suicide prevention to communities along the route.
The initiative is designed to promote open conversations about mental health and encourage people experiencing emotional or personal difficulties to seek support rather than facing their challenges alone.
Over the coming days, cyclists will continue their journey through cities and communities across the country, spreading awareness about the importance of protecting lives and supporting people experiencing mental distress.
The Bikeathon is scheduled to conclude at Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo on September 10, coinciding with World Suicide Prevention Day. The final stage will mark the culmination of the awareness campaign, which seeks to bring greater public attention to suicide prevention and mental well-being.
The 1333 Crisis Support Service provides confidential, toll-free assistance around the clock in all three national languages. The service is intended to provide a safe space for people who are experiencing a difficult period in their lives and need someone to talk to.
Organisers are encouraging anyone going through a tough time, feeling overwhelmed or struggling emotionally to reach out for support.
The Bikeathon's 13th-year journey underscores the importance of community awareness and early support in suicide prevention, while reinforcing the message that seeking help is an important step towards protecting mental well-being and saving lives.
People who need crisis support can contact the 1333 service at any time. The campaign's message remains simple: “Let’s Talk” – 1333.

Sri Lanka's rising motorsport talent, Tanasha Raddella, continues to break barriers for girls in motorsport after becoming the first female driver in history to win a round of the IAME Sri Lanka Series, securing a landmark victory in the third round of the championship held in Bandaragama. The historic achievement marks another milestone in her rapidly growing career and highlights the impact of strong corporate support from Mobil, Yokohama, Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Auto Miraj, and Pitpass, who continue to back her journey on both the national and international stage.

Already recognised as one of Sri Lanka's youngest female international kart racers at 9 years of age, Tanasha has competed in the IAME Sri Lanka Championship and currently races in both the Malaysian Karting Championship and the IAME Malaysia Championship. From August, she will also compete in the IAME Asia Championship, taking on some of the region's most talented young drivers. Her journey represents more than sporting achievement; it is a powerful story of determination, resilience and the courage to challenge convention in a sport that has traditionally been dominated by men.

Tanasha's historic victory in Bandaragama not only reinforces her ability to compete at the highest level but also sends a powerful message that talent and determination know no gender. Her success is helping reshape perceptions of women's participation in motorsport while inspiring more young girls to pursue their ambitions with confidence.

Their investment reflects a belief in youth development, equal opportunity and the potential of young Sri Lankan athletes to compete successfully on the international stage. Together, they are demonstrating how meaningful partnerships can help talented young competitors realise their dreams while inspiring the next generation.

As international motorsport demands significant investment in training, travel, equipment and competition, sponsorship plays a vital role in enabling talented young drivers to compete consistently at the highest levels. With the continued backing of her partners, Tanasha will participate the Malaysian Karting Championship, IAME Malaysia Championship and, from August, the IAME Asia Championship, proudly carrying Sri Lanka onto some of Asia's most competitive racing circuits.

Beyond motorsport, Tanasha is a well-rounded young athlete with an impressive record across multiple disciplines. She is the Under-10 Athletics Champion at her school, showcasing her speed, endurance and competitive spirit. She is also a member of the school's Under-13 Girls' Basketball Team and the football squad, reflecting her versatility, teamwork and passion for sport. Her achievements across athletics and team sports further demonstrate the discipline, determination and resilience that continue to drive her success on and off the racetrack.

Tanasha's achievements are encouraging young girls across Sri Lanka to believe they too can excel in fields where women have historically been underrepresented. Her story serves as a reminder that passion, perseverance and the support of those who believe in young talent can open doors once thought impossible.

Thushira Raddella, Parent and Manager of Tanasha Raddella, said, "This partnership is about much more than racing. It is about giving a young girl the opportunity to chase her dreams, breaking barriers for girls in motorsport, inspiring others to believe that no dream is too big, and showing what is possible when businesses invest in young talent. We are grateful to Mobil, Yokohama, Cinnamon Grand Colombo, Auto Miraj and Pitpass for believing in Tanasha and joining us on this journey."

As Tanasha continues to build on her success at home and abroad, her historic victory in the IAME Sri Lanka Series stands as a defining moment for Sri Lankan motorsport. DFCC Bank Cycling Initiative Raises Support for Sri Lankan Leopard Conservation

By Vipula Amarasinghe

A cycling initiative organised by DFCC Bank has brought together communities in Colombo, Kandy and Tissamaharama in support of efforts to protect Sri Lanka's endangered leopard population.
The bank's latest Ride for the Rosette event attracted customers, employees, cycling enthusiasts, families and wildlife supporters, transforming a community cycling activity into a conservation-focused campaign aimed at raising awareness and financial support for leopard protection.
The initiative was conducted under DFCC Bank's Ride for Life CSR programme, which has previously used cycling as a platform to promote causes including mental health, women's empowerment, health and wellbeing, and community participation. This year's programme placed the spotlight on wildlife conservation and the need to protect one of Sri Lanka's most important native species.
The event sought to demonstrate how public participation and community action can contribute to wider environmental objectives. Participants were encouraged to view every kilometre of the ride as a contribution towards creating greater awareness of leopard conservation and the importance of protecting the country's natural ecosystems.
A key feature of the initiative was the voluntary financial support provided by participants. DFCC Bank has pledged to match the contributions received, effectively doubling the funds available for conservation activities.
The funds raised through the programme, together with the bank's matching contribution, will be directed towards conservation programmes carried out by the Wilderness & Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT).
The support will benefit projects including the Yala Buffer Area Project and the Hallgolla Estate Project. The initiatives focus on protecting leopard habitats, supporting scientific research and biodiversity conservation, while also promoting improved coexistence between wildlife and communities living close to leopard habitats.
DFCC Bank Director and Chief Executive Officer Thimal Perera said the leopard played a vital role in maintaining the ecological balance of Sri Lanka's forests and natural environments.
He said protecting the country's apex predator was closely connected to safeguarding biodiversity and the wider natural systems upon which communities depend. According to him, the Ride for the Rosette initiative was designed to give the public a direct and meaningful opportunity to support conservation efforts.
He also expressed appreciation to all those who participated in the programme and contributed towards conservation initiatives.
The latest campaign reflects DFCC Bank's wider approach to corporate social responsibility, which places emphasis on encouraging communities to take an active role in addressing social and environmental challenges.
Through its various sustainability and community programmes, the bank has continued to support initiatives related to environmental protection, responsible development and community wellbeing.
Conservationists have long highlighted the importance of protecting the Sri Lankan leopard and its habitat. As an apex predator, the species plays a significant role in maintaining the health and balance of ecosystems.
The Ride for the Rosette initiative has therefore connected a popular community activity with a wider environmental cause, highlighting how public participation can support conservation work on the ground.
For DFCC Bank, the message behind the event was clear: protecting Sri Lanka's wildlife requires collective action, and even a simple bicycle ride can help generate support for the future of the country's natural heritage.

Colombo Athletic Football Academy reaches Knockout Stage in its First Attempt at the Prestigious IBER Cup, Portugal

Colombo Athletic has made history as the first academy team from Sri Lanka invited to participate in the prestigious IBER Cup, one of the world’s most important global youth tournaments. The competition brings together one hundred and twenty teams from close to forty countries each year and has served as a launching pad for many current professional players who count it among their career highlights. Players like Bernado Silva, Ruben Dias, Nuno Mendis, Rafa Leao, Vitiniha, among others have played there in their youth.
In their debut appearance, Colombo Athletic secured two wins out of four matches during the group stages before advancing to the knockout round, where they faced tough opposition but ultimately fell short. The group stage lineup was particularly challenging, featuring three Portuguese teams and one Spanish team. They faced top ranked Portuguese, Spanish and UAE academy teams. This makes Colombo Athelteic an IBER Cup ranked team, with its credentials there. Currently Colombo Athletic is ranked at 6 in its group.
The academy views this as a crucial learning experience and the beginning of something significant. The achievement is bolstered by Colombo Athletic’s collaboration with AC Milan, with players trained at AC Milan camps in both Colombo and Milan, ensuring they develop according to the Milan method.

Rizwi Suhayb Trophy Renews Historic S. Thomas’ – Isipathana Rivalry

: In the annals of Sri Lankan schoolboy rugby, the 1989 S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia side stands apart. Under the inspired captaincy of Rizwi Suhayb, this extraordinary team achieved the ultimate prize — an undefeated season, clinching both the Schools League Championship and the President’s Trophy (Premadasa Trophy) in the same year.
Suhayb was the heartbeat of it all. A five-season veteran of the Thomian 1st XV and captain of the Sri Lanka Under-20 side that same year, he combined blistering pace with tactical brilliance, elevating every player around him.
The Thomians dismantled all league opposition before sealing their perfect season with a commanding final victory over arch-rivals Isipathana College. Winning the Double undefeated was unprecedented — and remains one of the most revered achievements in Sri Lankan schools rugby.
Their legacy endured beyond that glorious season, with the 1990 and 1991 sides extending the unbeaten run to a remarkable 47 consecutive victories.
S. Thomas’ and Isipathana share one of Sri Lankan schoolboy rugby’s greatest rivalries — a fierce, decades-long contest that has shaped the character of both institutions. It is precisely this history that makes the Rizwi Suhayb Trophy, contested annually between these two giants, so deeply meaningful. Following Suhayb’s untimely passing, his 1989 teammates ensured his legend endures through this fixture — a tribute as enduring as the man himself.
